It\u2019s that you start learning the wrong lessons from it. &lt;subtitle&gt;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some people think saying \u201cplease\u201d and \u201cthank you\u201d to AI means you\u2019ve started assigning feelings to a spreadsheet with stage makeup.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>I say it for the same reason I don\u2019t kick dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Not because the machine cares. Because I do.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t anthropomorphism. It\u2019s self-discipline. The point is not whether the machine deserves courtesy. The point is whether I want to normalize casual contempt as a habit.<\/p>\n<p>Interfaces don\u2019t just shape outputs &#8211; they shape users.<\/p>\n<p>If I spend hours a week issuing clipped demands to systems that mimic conversation, <strong>that is still rehearsal for real life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The machine doesn\u2019t care. <strong>You\u2019re still the one being trained.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This Is Not About Robot Feelings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get the obvious objections out of the way.<\/p>\n<p>No, I don\u2019t think the chatbot has feelings.<\/p>\n<p>No, I\u2019m not trying to appease Skynet.<\/p>\n<p>And no, this isn\u2019t a plea for \u201cAI rights,\u201d which is exactly the kind of meeting invite I would delete on sight.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t about whether the model deserves politeness.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about whether you want to rehearse casual contempt and pretend that habit stays neatly contained.<\/p>\n<p>People see me type \u201cplease\u201d in a prompt and act like I\u2019ve started treating a toaster like a houseguest.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>People act like courtesy only matters when the recipient can appreciate it. But that\u2019s not how behavior works. A lot of what we call manners is really just self-governance. It\u2019s not always about honoring the other party. Sometimes it\u2019s about refusing to become the kind of person who gets comfortable forgetting they know how to be decent in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy is not always for the recipient. Sometimes it\u2019s for the person you refuse to become.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Repetition Is Never Neutral<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reason this matters has nothing to do with whether AI is \u201calive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It has everything to do with repetition.<\/p>\n<p>If you use conversational AI often, you are not just operating software. You are participating in a repeated social simulation. The interface is designed to feel conversational. It invites human patterns: asking, clarifying, correcting, directing, approving, dismissing.<\/p>\n<p>They say it takes seven days to build a habit.<\/p>\n<p>Repeated behavior becomes default behavior.<\/p>\n<p>And defaults are where the real story lives.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to think of software as a passive tool. You click buttons, it gives results, end of story. But that\u2019s not how modern interfaces work &#8211; especially the ones designed to mimic conversation. They don\u2019t just help you do things. They shape how you do them.<\/p>\n<p>They reward speed.<br \/>\nThey reward command-style phrasing.<br \/>\nThey remove social friction.<br \/>\nThey make abruptness feel efficient.<br \/>\nThey can make contempt feel harmless.<\/p>\n<p>And if you repeat that pattern enough, it starts feeling normal.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the catch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s Just a Tool\u201d Is Doing a Lot of Work Here<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People say, \u201cIt\u2019s just a tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sure.<\/p>\n<p>So is a dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>So is a workflow.<\/p>\n<p>So is a recommendation engine.<\/p>\n<p>And yet we already know tools change behavior. We\u2019ve seen it over and over.<\/p>\n<p>Dashboards make people over-trust green lights.<br \/>\nAuto-correct means none of us can spell anymore.<br \/>\nRecommendation systems make people follow suggestions as if they were decisions.<br \/>\nAI assistants make people talk like little emperors and call it productivity.<\/p>\n<p>That last one may sound funny. It\u2019s also real.<\/p>\n<p>The interface lowers the cost of abruptness. That doesn\u2019t sound like a big deal until you remember how much human behavior is just <strong>whatever became easy enough to repeat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you make a behavior frictionless, you get more of it.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s true in product design. It\u2019s true in organizations. And it\u2019s true in people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Courtesy Is Not the Same as Delusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is where people get tangled up.<\/p>\n<p>They hear \u201cI say please and thank you to AI\u201d and immediately assume that means I\u2019ve gone bonkers and think the smart appliances are about to become my therapist.<\/p>\n<p>Nope.<\/p>\n<p>I know what the system is.<\/p>\n<p>I also know what I am.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a difference between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>believing the machine is sentient<\/li>\n<li>choosing not to practice contempt in an interaction that feels social enough to make the habit stick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That is not anthropomorphism.<\/p>\n<p>That is not delusion. It is self-governance.<\/p>\n<p>If I\u2019m going to spend a chunk of my workday interacting with systems that imitate conversation, I\u2019d rather reinforce a habit of measured communication than rehearse being a jerk because the recipient \u201cdoesn\u2019t count.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The habit of deciding who or what \u201ccounts\u201d has a way of spreading.<\/p>\n<p>And frankly? I\u2019m not buying that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s Not Just at Work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not just about tone. It\u2019s not \u201cbe nicer.\u201d It\u2019s not etiquette class for people who prompt models.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about what repeated system interaction trains in you.<\/p>\n<p>Because the same posture that says:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cJust do what I said\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThat\u2019s NOT what I said.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhy is this wrong again?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat part of that don\u2019t you understand?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t make me explain this twice\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cUgh, useless\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>. . . can bleed into how people handle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>junior staff<\/li>\n<li>support teams<\/li>\n<li>QA feedback<\/li>\n<li>vendors<\/li>\n<li>customers<\/li>\n<li>family and friends<\/li>\n<li>even their own review of system output<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And that last one is the sneaky one.<\/p>\n<p>A person who gets used to issuing fast, confident commands to a system that always responds fluently can start expecting the world to behave the same way. Less patience. Less curiosity. Less checking. Less tolerance for ambiguity. More assumption that a fast answer is a good answer.<\/p>\n<p>That is not harmless.<\/p>\n<p>That is how bad decisions start looking like competence.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve talked about how systems influence behavior. What matters is which behavior they reward. This is just that principle wearing a new hat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Risk Isn\u2019t Sentience. It\u2019s Conditioning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The popular scare tactic is that machines will become more human.<\/p>\n<p>The real, boring story is that humans become more mechanical.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the one worth watching.<\/p>\n<p>Not because saying \u201cplease\u201d magically makes you virtuous.<\/p>\n<p>And not because being blunt to AI means you\u2019re secretly one missed coffee away from punting a golden retriever across the yard &#8211; or, in my case, that yappy little Maltese.<\/p>\n<p>But because repeated interaction trains posture.<\/p>\n<p>It trains pacing.<br \/>\nIt trains tone.<br \/>\nIt trains assumptions.<br \/>\nIt trains what feels acceptable.<br \/>\nIt trains what stops feeling worth noticing.<\/p>\n<p>If you think that doesn\u2019t matter because \u201cit\u2019s just software,\u201d you\u2019re making the same mistake people make with every system that quietly trains them while they stare at outputs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So . . . Should You Say Please?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t say please and thank you to AI, I am not calling the manners police.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not the point.<\/p>\n<p>The point is simpler and more useful:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pay attention to what the interface is rewarding in you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the tool makes you more impatient, notice that.<br \/>\nIf it makes you more dismissive, notice that.<br \/>\nIf it makes you less careful because the responses sound smooth, definitely notice that.<br \/>\nIf it gets you used to being obeyed immediately, don\u2019t act surprised when that expectation starts leaking.<\/p>\n<p>Because this is bigger than politeness.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about whether you\u2019re letting a system train your habits while telling yourself you\u2019re just using a tool.<\/p>\n<p>AI does not need your kindness.<br \/>\nIt does not need your respect.<br \/>\nIt does not need your courtesy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You might.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because the habits you practice in low-stakes environments don\u2019t always stay there. The systems you interact with every day are not just helping you work.
