We’d like to introduce you to Usman Nadeem, Lead Software Developer for Protovate.
Usman has been with us since July 2021.
Originally from Lahore, Pakistan, he now lives in the Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada.
How would you describe your job to a group of five-year-olds?
I tell computers what the client is looking for in the language that computers understand.
What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
I just found it amazing that a computer could simulate real environments while playing games when growing up, and that got me interested, when I started programming there was no going back. Never looked back.
If you could get a new skill in 10 minutes, what would it be?
React & React Native.
What skill do you think everyone should learn?
If there are 2 skills that I think everyone should have are sales & being tech-savvy.
What’s the best advice you can give to someone who just is just starting their career?
Stay in touch with all the new trends in technology. Depth of knowledge is essential but breadth of knowledge is very important for today’s software developer.
What’s your secret talent that no one knows about?
I love books and love reading them.
How do you balance family life with your work life?
Still struggling. Whenever I get time, I try to spend it with my family.
Most of the times, talking to children on what happened in their day while making sure my phone is away, and telling them about my day.
On weekends – I try to keep at least one day free to spend with them when we can go to lakes here.

We call it “Mash ki Daal” and in English it is “Split and skinned black gram lentils”.

In books, I would request everyone to read Annie Duke’s “Thinking In Bets” where she explains decision quality and how good decisions are not sufficient for quality outcomes.
